HISTORY OF THE GHANA ASSOCIATION OF REGISTERED MEDICAL SONOGRAPHERS (GARMS)
Foundation and Early Beginnings (2008-2013)
The Ghana Association of Registered Medical Sonographers traces its origins to 2008 when the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) launched Ghana’s first sonography program. Three pioneering students—Benedict Agyei, Joseph Akorful, and Richmond Ashitey Nmai—embarked on this groundbreaking journey from 2009 to 2018, before the program evolved into a comprehensive medical imaging degree.
Building Community Through Technology (2013-2016)
Following their graduation in 2013, these pioneers recognized the need to create a professional network for sonographers in Ghana’s emerging field. They established a WhatsApp group to facilitate idea-sharing and maintain connections among practitioners, initially comprising members from the 2008 and 2009 cohorts. This virtual platform became the foundation for building unity within the relatively unknown profession.
Seeking Professional Recognition (2016-2018)
As membership grew, the group sought formal recognition and joined the Ghana Society of Radiographers (GSR) in 2016—the only established association for imaging professionals in Ghana at the time. However, the unique needs of sonographers highlighted the necessity for a dedicated professional body focused on career development and specialized training.
Formalization and Expansion (2018-2019)
A steering committee was established in 2018 to pursue legal registration and formal recognition. The group’s milestone achievement came in 2019 with a homecoming program at KNUST, celebrating their 10th anniversary with full departmental support and bringing greater visibility to the profession.
Growing Membership and National Reach (2019-2024)
The association expanded beyond KNUST when the University of Cape Coast (UCC) launched its sonography program, with graduates invited to join GARMS. Membership further diversified to include students from KLINTAPS, transforming GARMS from a single-institution group into a national association representing sonographers from multiple educational institutions.
Establishing Formal Leadership (2024)
In June 2024, GARMS achieved a significant milestone by activating its constitution and establishing its first formal executive body through democratic elections. This emergency session marked the transition from an informal network to a structured professional association with proper governance and leadership.
Today, GARMS stands as Ghana’s premier association for medical sonographers, uniting professionals and students from across the country while continuing to advocate for professional development and recognition in the medical imaging field.
VISION
To establish Ghana as a centre of excellence in sonography practice across Africa by embracing diversity in clinical applications, advancing evidence-based research, and implementing international standards while fostering strong connections with regional and global organisations to ensure all Ghanaians receive equitable access to world-class diagnostic ultrasound services.
We are committed to elevating sonography practice in Ghana through comprehensive professional development and innovative research initiatives that address our unique healthcare challenges. By integrating international best practices while honoringhonouring indigenous knowledge, we strive to build robust partnerships with healthcare stakeholders across Africa and globally, advocating for the recognition of sonography as an essential component in Ghana’s healthcare system and empowering practitioners to deliver exceptional patient care that meets diverse cultural and clinical needs in all communities.
